Beauty Tariffs!

Hey my beauties! I’ve been keeping my eye on the tariffs to see how they will impact our industry and needless to say it has been quite the yo-yo of what’s going to move forward or not. So in the interest of simply informing what could POSSIBLY happen, I have taken a look at the most recent update and want to share a “in case this happens” view of what the beauty industry might look like and how it may impact your experiences at salons and spas nationwide. I have a list of the countries that will impact us the most as far as supplies and what part of the industry they will affect. In no particular order:

European Union or the EU: has a 20% tariff and will impact hair color, gloves, towels, skincare and makeup brands. Possible effective date is July 9, 2025.

China: has a 34% tariff and will impact lashes, estheticians, nail techs, hair extensions, makeup, tools: flat irons, blow dryers etc. Possible effective date is August 12, 2025.

Japan: has a 24% tariff and will mainly impact shears(scissors), razors, skincare, and sunscreen. Possible effective date is July 9, 2025.

United Kingdom or the UK: has a 10% tariff and will impact hair color, gloves, towels, skincare, makeup, perfumes/cologne, body care: soaps, lotions, bath bombs etc. Possible effective date is TBD.

Vietnam: has a 46% tariff and will impact luxury hair extensions, nails and skincare. Possible effective date is July 9, 2025.

India: has a 27% tariff and will impact hair extensions and makeup. Possible effective date is July 9, 2025.

Brazil: has a 10% tariff and will impact hair extensions and skincare/estheticians. Possible effective date is TBD.

South Korea: has a 26% tariff and will impact skincare. Possible effective date is July 9, 2025.

Mexico: has a 25% tariff and will impact shampoos, conditioners and hair color. Possible effective date is TBD.

Canada: has a 25% tariff and will impact shampoos, conditioners, and hair color. Possible effective date is TBD.

Isreal: has a 17% tariff and will impact shampoos, conditioners, styling products and skincare. Possible effective date is July 9, 2025.

Since gathering the above list from a week prior to me publishing this, the TACO tariffs has changed yet again. So please use the above information as an added resource knowing that things can change at any moment. I’m sure there are more that I would list and I’m also sure that some of the countries I’ve listed above manufactures more than I’ve listed. However, this is close enough to help navigate some uncertainty that we have as beauty professionals but also this keeps consumers aware of how this will impact us all. I know for sure that I will personally and professionally(behind the chair) be impacted on tariffs from the EU, UK, Vietnam, Mexico, Canada and Isreal. I can assure you that what we are doing as an industry, or at least amongst my circle, is sharing resources, learning best communication updates for our clients and figuring how to price and budget so we can delay the impact on our clients.

From a client standpoint, I understand the hesitation and anxiety as far as not knowing what to do when it comes down to maintiaining your salon routine. What I would do is continue to get your chemical and extension services from your salon professional. Before that though, I would go in for a consultation to see how to maintain your healthiest hair both in the salon and at home while on a temporary tariff budget. This way your can still support our industry without breaking your pockets to do so. Trust me there are solutions to this train wreck of tariffs. I’ve gone through the financial crisis of ‘08/’09 and the 2020 pandemic lockdown where it was literally illegal for me to be in the salon. Needless to say we can and will navigate this as well. As the old saying goes…this too shall pass! Please feel free to share this will anyone that might not be in the loop with how this will impact them as a consumer and/or beauty professional!

Until next time…SMOOCHES!!!
